PöchlarnIn the Nibelungenlied, Margrave Rudeger of Bechelaren, Etzel's henchman, governs the area east of Enns.Rudeger receives the Nibelungen at Pöchlarn Castle on their way to Etzel's court. Rudeger's daughter Gotelint gets engaged to Giselher. After four days, the guests continue their journey, laden with generous gifts. The first people settled here in the Neolithic period, about 4000 years ago. Later the area was inhabited by various tribes and peoples who were passing through. All in all, the town has had an eventful and varied history. It has never actually been officially recognised as a town. On 26th May 1267, Bishop Leo Tundorfer of Regensburg wrote a certificate in which Pöchlarn was described as "Stat ze Bechlaren" for the first time. In 1886, Oskar Kokoschka was born in Pöchlarn. There is an exhibition dedicated to him in the house in which he was born. Further sights include the Nibelungen memorial, Pöchlarn Castle and the parish church of St. Mary. Every two years a Nibelungen Festival takes place in the town. Pöchlarn is in the Most area on the south bank of the Danube at the mouth of the river Erlauf in the Nibelungengau region. The town has just over 4,000 inhabitants. More information on Pöchlarn |
