Plattling

The city of Plattling is located in the Gäuboden region in Lower Bavaria.

The oldest evidence of human settlements here is about 3000 years old. In Roman times a paved road ran from Regensburg via Plattling – where it crossed the river Isar – to Passau. Plattling itself was documented for the first time in 868 A.D.

Plattling’s present location is not its medieval one. In 1379 duke Albrecht I had to relocate the settlement due to flooding of the river Isar and its shifting river bed.

The first station building for Plattling was opened on 20 September 1860 when the Bavarian Eastern Railway Company's line between Straubing and Passau went into service. Plattling station is still an important railway hub in Eastern Lower Bavaria.

The author of the Nibelungenlied has Kriemhild spend a night in Plattling on her way to Etzel king of the Huns. It is also here that she is welcomed by her uncle, bishop Pilgrim of Passau.

Every four years in the summer a Nibelungen Festival takes place in Plattling. The next one is in 2010. A Nibelungen Market is also held every four years. The last one was in 2008.
