PförringThe market town of Pförring is in the Ingolstadt region of the Eichstätt district in Upper Bavaria. This small town has a population of just over 3,000.In Roman times a fort stood near Pförring, which was part of the Limes fortifications. It was built in the year 141. The name Pförring comes from the name Faringa, which was first mentioned in 787. Faringa is derived from the word Ferge, meaning Ferryman, which explains the importance of the Danube river-crossing here. In 1318, the community was elevated to the status of a market town. The modern borough of Pförring was created in 1818 by the Bavarian Communities Edict. Its outlying villages became part of the town in the 1970s during the restructuring of town boundaries. According to the Nibelungenlied, Kriemhild's procession, which was travelling from the court at Worms to Etzel's Castle, reached the Danube at Pförring. The lake at the source of the Kels at the ruin of Ettling Castle is the fountain of the prophesying women in the Nibelungenlied. Here, two swan maidens prophesied the demise of the Nibelungen to Hagen. More information on Pförring |
