Alzey
Alzey is in the Alzey-Worms district of Rhenish Hesse in Rhineland-Palatinate. In the Nibelungenlied, the knight Volker of Alzey is the bandsman at the court in Worms. Thus Alzey is also known as Volkerstadt.
Alzey, a small county town, is surrounded by vineyards and has a beautiful old town centre, full of timbered houses, quaint bars and shops. The best known person to come from Alzey in modern times was the eminent wine-grower Georg Scheu (1879-1949), to whom there is a memorial in the town.
At the centre of the little town is the Ross-Market. Here the Ross-Market fountain was inaugurated in 1985. The horse is Volker of Alzey's steed, which the knight has left at the drinking trough while he mingles with the people at the market. The horse is carrying Volker's viol and his shield with his coat of arms. The ring of the Nibelungen lies in the fountain, which is encircled with vines.
